President’s Corner - October 2008

Hello Wisconsin Chapter Members,

Fall has arrived!!! The trees are turning colors and soon the ghosts and goblins will be howling about.

We have had an active past few weeks. On Saturday, September 27, 2008, Milwaukee County Zoo, we held the ASSE FREE fun day at the zoo. This event was free to family members as well. When it was all said and done, we had 73 members/families sign up. For those of you in attendance, we had a beautiful sunny day in the mid 70’s. We started of this great event with a presentation by James Weishan, Safety Director. He discussed many interesting topics including animal and guest safety, challenging zoo safety situations and the necessary OSHA compliance programs they need to deal with on a daily basis. The zoo also had fun activities for the little one who didn’t want to participate in the presentation. This included a train ride and personal tour of the monkey exhibit. Following his presentation, we ate a boxed lunch and were then off to the fun zoo activities. Look for activities like this down the road. I would like to thank Nicole Tubeszewski, ASSE Recreation Coordinator for her time in putting this event together.

On October 9, 2008 we had the Compliance Update meeting at Alverno College. This event and meeting are excellent networking opportunities where industry information is professionally shared in a welcoming atmosphere. During this meeting, we had four presenters discussing new laws and legislations in the fields of environmental safety, Workers’ Compensation, Americans With Disabilities and OSHA Compliance. Anyone attending this meeting who had professional designations, received .5 CEU’s. I want to thanks Russ Fote for getting all the talented speakers as he does every year.

The next technical meeting will be held on November 13, 2008. Jack Hurley will be presenting on Business Contingency Planning. Look for more information and an e-mail blast to be sent to you in the next week.

Our website is continually being upgraded. Please check wisconsin.asse.org for upcoming technical, board and social meetings, job listings, newsletter and other industry details. We encourage all members to submit articles and/or case studies for the newsletter, which is published on our website monthly. A prize will be given to members who submit a success story which gets published.

I hope all of you enjoy this fantastic time of year.

Sincerely,

Jim Jones, CSP
